What Is on the Truck
Most of the doors we pull springs for in Fallbrook are single-layer steel, either a 16x7 double or a single 9x7, hung on the wider frames that got built through the late 1970s and 1980s in this part of the county. That's a different animal from the newer insulated sandwich doors going up closer to Escondido proper, the panel gauge is thinner, the hinges are stamped, not cast, and the torsion bar is usually 1 3/4 inch shaft rather than the heavier 2-inch shaft you see on newer wide doors. The door won't move, or it moves an inch and stops, or the opener strains and the chain sounds like it's working way too hard for what should be a light door. If a cable has jumped the drum on top of a broken spring, the door can hang crooked in the frame, one corner low. None of that is an opener problem, even though the opener usually takes the blame first.
Spring failure on this era of door mostly ends one of two ways: a clean snap you can hear from inside the house, or a slow give where the coils start to sag and the door gets heavier to lift by hand over a few weeks before it finally goes.
